"To make something as if it where the real thing. Painting a table top to look like a piece of Marble. Make a piece of Pine look like Mahogany." This practice is used in all different areas of homes, offices, buildings enterance ways, airports, doctors offices, the list could go on and on. These finishes are done in oils and latex glazes with layers being applied to create the desired look, or picture. To get started, you prepare the surface with a 10" knife, using the knife to scrape the top surface and by knocking off the top of the wall or and high spots, then sanding the surface as well and come to have a smooth surface to work with. If patching is needed, then apply the coats of compound to the surface, then sand the area make sure to sand the edges of the patch with 150 grit sandpaper, clean the surface, using a damp sponge to gently wipe the surface free of dust Then your ready for the next step.
When doing your prep work always use a mask and goggles to protect your self. Make sure to clean up all the area that you are working in to make it dust free. Then if the surface needs to be primed, you would prime it with the right primer. There are primers for wood and for metal, there are primes for sheetrock. After the primer has dried, then 2 coats of color for your base coat can be applied, this gets the surface ready for you glaze to work. Getting the right glaze is important, one that has a long open window time, so you can work with the glaze and it does not dry to fast. The best one would be a 1 hour open window time, in latex. Oils have a good open window time as well. I use to love oils, but have changed for health reason to the latex glaze and paints.
With the latex the ratio is 4 or 5 to one, meaning 4 parts glaze to one part paint or color if using stains. After mixing well try it on a paint stick to see if you have it mixed at the right ratio. If you do then you can start your project that you have in mind. Layering your glaze is applying more than one coat of glaze to your project. In doing this your 1st coat should be dry. You can use whiting, which helps to not activated your first coat, but is not required. then using your glaze the second coat can be applied and your manipulating the glaze to aquire your desired look. After your project is finished stand back and admire your work.
